I'm trying to think of every possible 3-letter name Enid might have used that hasn't already been ruled out by what letters have already been guessed and this is all I can come up with...

Snowball is Pip's little white mouse?

And you are completely correct, Courtenay! Good thinking. It relates to The Boys' and Girls' Circus Book.

I would say that the key to this game is not to try letters that are already obvious in the hope that they may be repeated (the odds are against you), but to concentrate on the words you don't know, eliminate those letters that have already been used and think what might be likely from what is left. Going for consonants can be more fruitful than vowels. T/N/R/S/H/D/L are the most likely consonants in English in that order. It's easier to guess words from their consonants than just their vowels.

Example: ++O++A++ tells you nothing, but SN++B+LL is fairly obvious.

Your turn, Courtenay.

And I'm so sorry I haven't been thinking about puzzles much lately!!  Here's an extra-long one to make up for it...

"_ ' _ _ / _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ / _ / _ _ _ / _ / _ _ _ _ _ , / _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ , / _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ / — / _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ ?"

(That dash is a long one for a pause in the sentence, not a hyphen between two words.)
