Alas I've just looked it up and Bill is not the answer. I now know the answer but as I looked it up in the book it would be cheating to post it. Anyone else?

Y2 would have been whomever Bill was communicating with via his wireless set? His boss?
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

That's probably correct. Philip had picked up a telephone receiver, attached to the wireless, and was immediately in touch with Y2. When Bill returned he wasn't very pleased that Philip had touched his wireless equipment. He spoke to Y2, telling him that it was L4 speaking. Don't recall Y2 being mentioned again. So yes, Y2 was probably Bill's boss or one of his associates.

I should think it's up to Pete to give you the red light to post a new question, Fiona.

Fiona is indeed correct and as the two week time limit has long expired on this one, so Fiona may now freely post a new one.
