In horror they threw up their hands,
There were no bottles and no cans,
"This is a disgrace",
"What a lot of trouble one avoids if one refuses to have anything to do with the common herd. To have no job, to devote ones life to literature, is the most wonderful thing in the world. - Cicero

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

A new starter:

Young Bets had just found a 'glue',

Young Bets had just found a 'glue',
Footprints from quite a large shoe,
Plus a red plastic nose,
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

(E. Blyton, Sunday Times, 1951)

Young Bets had just found a 'glue',
Footprints from quite a large shoe,
Plus a red plastic nose,
And a wilting pink rose
'Tis loving and giving that makes life worth living.

Young Bets had just found a 'glue',
Footprints from quite a large shoe,
Plus a red plastic nose,
And a wilting pink rose
In a bag that was red, white and blue!

When our Ern was reading a book,

When our Ern was reading a book,
Undisturbed, in a nice cosy nook,
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

Undisturbed, in a nice cosy nook,
Until along came Goon,
Not a moment too soon,
And poor old Ern just shook!
'Go down to the side-shows by the river this afternoon. I'll meet you somewhere in disguise. Bet you won't know me!' wrote Fatty.

When Fatty had eaten a third éclair,
