I'm going to guess...

"Why, it's a rabbit!" cried Tom, astonished. "Where's Mr. Woffles?"

(I don't know which story this is from — at least, it doesn't sound like The Adventurous Four, which is the only one I can think of that has a Tom in it  — but "Woffles" is the kind of name Enid would use for a rabbit.)

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

You're correct, Courtenay. It comes from the story, "Little Mr. Woffles". Enid also wrote another story called "Where are you, Woffles?" about a rabbit who belonged to a boy named Terrence. Not the same rabbit, though.

Can you explain to me why Enid chose that name for a rabbit? It just down sound apt to me. You can see why Beatrix Potter chose Cottontail. But Woffles :?:

Well, in one of the Noddy stories — and I think it's my old favourite Well Done Noddy! — Noddy is writing songs for some of the other toys in Toyland, and this is what he writes for the toy rabbit:

"Woffly nose
And hoppity feet,
Little Miss Bunny
Is perfectly sweet."

So I assume "Woffles" is Enid's way of referring to a rabbit's fluffy, twitchy nose!

Anyway, if I don't come up with a new one tonight, I will tomorrow! Thanks, Dave.

Right, here we go... :D

(If that longer line looks a bit funny, it's a dash for a pause in the sentence. This is a direct quote from a Blyton character.)
