Rain: Mister Meddle gets soaked through in the rain because he's busy pretending to be a soldier, slashing about with his closed umbrella as if it were a sword. On other occasions he holds his umbrella above his head but forgets to open it - or leaves it behind at a friend's house! ('Mister Meddle's Umbrella').

Red:

Red: The Old Red Stocking, a short story by Enid (which I know from one of my favourite collections, Stories for You) in which the red stocking in question goes through a range of uses, mishaps and mendings before getting badly holed by a moth grub and destined to be thrown away. But then it's rescued at the last minute and ends up happily as a little girl's Christmas stocking all full of gifts. It's a lovely example of Enid's ability to "humanise" even an inanimate object and make her audience feel for it as if it were alive — and I've always remembered she ends the story, typically, with an appeal to her young readers: "Perhaps you can write the rest of [the red stocking's] adventures!" I was intrigued by that idea as a child, but never did take her up on it...

Flying: The opening of The Valley of Adventure, beginning with Bill taking the children for a trip in his private aeroplane and inviting them on an overnight flight — only for something to go terribly awry in the dark at the airport... and so the adventure begins...

Dance:

Dance: Staying with Valley, the dance the two girls did behind the waterfall to distract the men who were following the boys, who, all unconsciously, were leading the men to their hideout.

Fruit:

Fruit: In The Secret Island the children earn money by gathering fruit, nuts and mushrooms and selling them in the village at the far end of the lake.

Fog:

Fog - "The House in the Fog" a short story I loved as a child, about a boy who gets lost in the fog and stumbles upon a very strange house.
