A clever young girl named Ruth,
Was always seeking the truth.
Till one day she found
A torc in the ground
Which gave her perpetual youth.

The first thing that popped into my head was a bangle but that's spelt differently!

I thought it might be torch, but couldn't see how that would give perpetual youth.
Edit: Just Google it and found this meaning: A torc, also spelled torq or torque, is a large rigid or at least stiff neck ring in metal, made either as a single piece or from strands twisted together.

Ah so you can spell it differently!
I have always seen a bangle/necklace spelt as 'torque', I didn't know you could spell it differently. In that case perhaps it was a beautiful jewelled piece of jewellery that was magically imbibed with the secret of eternal youth!

Yes, I googled it too, but came to the conclusion that some of our limericks don't make much sense anyway!

Yes, "torc" is an alternative spelling of "torque." Torques were often made from gold, and the Anglo-Saxons and other ancient people looked upon gold as having magical properties because it was so attractive, malleable and virtually indestructible.

Here's the "Great Torc" found in a farmer's field in Snettisham, Norfolk - it's over 2,000 years old and is "one of the most elaborate golden objects made in the ancient world"!

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I've been to the British Museum several times to see torques/torcs and other treasures. It's amazing to think what a lot of work went into objects like that.
