Today I have bought a little book by Alice Cortkran in a second hand bookshop. There is no date in it, but the book is certainly very old. In the front page there is a signature and a date of March 1893. I have tried to search for the biography of this author and it only says she died in 1916 and then a list of her works. This book I have is called Mischievous Jack and has a very nice cover. I wonder if anyone here knows this writer or has read one of her books.
I am just going to start reading this one...

Not heard of her before, but the book you have seems quite interesting! Let us all know how you got on with the book.
