Sax Rohmer

Post by Billy Farmer »

I wondered are there any members on this forum, who have read any of Sax Rohmer's Books, I know that Sax Rohmer's, most famous creation was Fu Manchu, who featured in five 1960's films starring Christopher Lee, my favourite Fu Manchu film was The Face of Fu Manchu (1965), featuring Nigel Green as Nayland Smith, I also liked The Brides of Fu Manchu (1966), which featured Douglas Wilmer as Nayland Smith, unfortunately the third 1960's Fu Manchu film - The Vengeance of Fu Manchu, also featuring Douglas Wilmer as Nayland Smith, was a poor film, and the final two 1960's Fu Manchu films, which featured Richard Greene as Nayland Smith, were dreadful films.

I know that the character of Fu Manchu, has also been featured in other films, and on TV.

I have read all the Fu-Manchu books. I think I have mentioned before that the initial trilogy, "The Mystery of Dr. Fu-Manchu" (1913) "The Devil Doctor" (1916) and "The Si-Fan Mysteries"(1917), are vastly superior to the later books (1931-1959). He did not intend to write any more about the character after the initial three, but the (silent) films based on them were so popular, he was persuaded to do so. The character in the books is not really like Christopher Lee played him. The film, "The Mask of Fu Manchu" (1932), starring Boris Karloff as Fu Manchu is surprisingly good.
