Don't know whether there's anything in this list that fits the bill?

Thanks, Pete. There seems to be no end to that list!!

This one sounds quite promising, although the cover bears a strange resemblance to "American Gothic"...

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

My book only arrived yesterday, and I have started it already.
How I agree with the opening short biography by Vanessa Robertson.I too am enjoying a book 'of its time' (1936).

Anyone who wants an alternative to Enid Blyton will I'm sure enjoy this well written book.
I like reading books that I feel are not influenced by Enid Blyton - the Secret Island did not appear in book form until 1938..

I love books too that include maps, secrets,Islands, treasure, mystery etc so this book ticks all the boxes for me.

Sounds lovely, Pete — I like that introduction too. One that clearly implies that children are able to understand and appreciate a book "of its time" without it having to be updated and modernised!!

I'd be very interested to hear what you think of the book once you've read it. It sounds like one I might enjoy too. :D
