Time travel in sci-fi

I was just doing a BTTF trilogy binge watch and I think it's been pointed out that Biff Tannen from the dystopian "Hell Valley" 1985-A in Back to the Future II must have paid off a number of unsavory people to keep himself alive given his reckless use of the sports almanac.
It would be easy for a hypothetical time traveler in the real world to disappear if certain nefarious people think he knows too much or is cutting into their profits.
