The Wartime Scrapbook - Compiled by Robert Opie

Post by Poppy »

I bought this book earlier in the week in a Charity shop for just £2.50 and I am thrilled with my purchase. It is a very large 60 page scrapbook, completely full of wartime memorabilia. It is compiled by Robert Opie and on research, I discovered that there is a whole series of scrapbooks ranging from subjects such as the Victorian and Edwardian era - up to the 70's, etc! I looked them up on eBay, however, and they are quite expensive - so I am feeling happy about my £2.50-buy! Has anyone heard of these?

That looks gorgeous, Poppy! :D I've heard of Robert Opie - I can't remember in what context - but wasn't aware of this series of books. Well done on a great purchase!

Well done, Poppy. You got a real bargain with your purchase. :D

I have copies of Robert Opie's 1950s and 1960s Scrapbooks and they are superb books.

:D Thanks very much, Courtenay and Eddie!

If you look on Google Images, there are some examples of the contents of this book:

It covers so many attributes of the war which I wasn't aware of. It is an excellent, fascinating insight into this era.

A lovely book, Poppy. I seem to remember seeing it on the shelves of the Ginger Pop Shop, last year when I was in. I should have bought it really, but it was on one of the high shelves, and I couldn't reach it. And by the time I'd looked at the second hand books, I forgot to ask the assistant to get it down for me.

That looks absolutely lovely, Poppy, you must be hugely enjoying reading it! In Battle (inland East Sussex) they have a museum called Yesterday's World and an impressive collection of memorabilia and items that look similar to the illustrations you photograph, well worth a visit if you are in this neck of the woods!

That sounds very interesting too, Floragord - I think I remember seeing it across the road when I visited Battle Abbey last year, but either the museum was closed that day or I didn't have time to go and look. Another place I'll have to put on my "to visit" list! :D

Thanks Julie and floragord! :D

Floragord: the museum that you mentioned in your post sounds absolutely fascinating. I'd love to visit it, if ever I happen to be going anywhere near Sussex. We have some excellent museums near us, too, which are lucky to be within distance of. For example: Eden Camp near Malton is an excellent source for war time knowledge - memorabilia, etc, is displayed within 33 huts which used to be a Prisoner of War Camp during the second world war. My friend and I visited late last year and it was an excellent, highly interesting experience.

I have Robert Opie's book 'Remember When?' which goes from the 1900's to the 90's, mainly focusing on toys and games. Its a fascinating book. :-)

It looks like you got a real bargain there Poppy, well done!

I wonder if Robert Opie is any relation to Iona and Peter Opie, the famous children's folklore collectors?

A lovely book Poppy. I haven't got that one but I do have a couple of other wartime memorabilia books. It was a fascinating and very photogenic period.

The Museum of Shops in Eastbourne is an excellent place, well worth an hour of anyone's time.

Highly recommended, Courtenay!, we were surprised how extensive the museum is, over several floors, prepare to clamber up and down tiny winding staircases :). They are open every day now, and have an amusing gift shop, sadly the cafe is no more. Lots of interesting video clips and experiential stuff, we were glad to have bags of time and eventually totter across the road to the fabulous Pilgrims Rest cafe, was part of the Abbey guest house back in the mists...
