Winnie the Pooh & other famous bears.

Post by pete9012S »

Winnie the Pooh could be banned from a Polish playground, after politicians labelled the character as a half-naked hermaphrodite who is an inappropriate role model to children.

I'm not really looking for a heated debate on the rights or wrongs of this article, but it did make me realise how many bears have been used as characters in childrens stories/cartoon/films etc.

Then I wondered if Winnie the pooh was the least clothed bear? Did Paddington wear much clothing? Rupert? The Hair Bear Bunch?
How many Bears are there that feature in children's entertainment over the years?

Can you name the fictional and animated bears from these pictures?

Goodness me - the Polish councillor's statement about Winnie the Pooh is so bizarre that it's bear-ly worth commenting on!

My favourite bears are Rupert because he has fantastic adventures, and Paddington because he's very endearing despite (or perhaps partly because of) the many scrapes he gets into.

I am definitely a 'Rupert Bear' person - I use to day-dream that I was with him enjoying his his
fantastic adventures.

I missed out on Rupert (not growing up in England) but certainly had Winnie-the-Pooh and a bit of Paddington. Oh yes, and Sooty! :D

I suppose bears are so popular in children's stories and films/TV because of the ubiquity of the teddy bear - which of course had its origins when someone capitalised on a political cartoon about US President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt refusing to shoot a captured bear: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teddy_bear" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Back to Pooh Bear (and being 25% Polish by ancestry, I almost feel embarrassed at that councillor's incredible stupidity!), I was first introduced to the Disney version, which is OK, but I later came to very much prefer the original stories with the E.H. Shepard illustrations. Sort of like how I eventually realised that Betty Maxey was not the most authentic (or talented) portrayer of the Famous Five!

Just remembered, I was going to say - in this week's Radio Times (I don't think the article is available online, just in the print magazine), there's an interview with Michael Bond about how he came to create Paddington. Very enjoyable to read.

Interestingly, he doesn't comment at all on the new film - obviously he gave it his sanction, but honestly, as some of us were discussing in another thread, it looks like a complete desecration.

I loved Paddington as a child, but haven't read most of the original books - another lot on my must-do list. Apart from the classic TV version, I mainly remember a lovely picture book we had about Paddington and the Brown family going to the seaside, where Paddington mishears a Punch and Judy show as "punching Judy" - with hilariously chaotic results.

18 is The Berenstein Bears (favourites of mine when I was little - the books came from the same publisher as Dr Seuss, and there was a TV version as well, which I didn't like as much). I have a feeling 23 might be Bear in the Big Blue House, but the photo is too small and indistinct to make out.

20 is another one that I know I've seen somewhere but can't place!!

I've got a feeling number 19 with the yellow neckerchief might be one of Yogi Bear's companions, though I can't come up with a name.

Here's another classic illustration of Winnie-the-Pooh, courtesy of the official Pooh Sticks Website:

Have any of you ever played Pooh Sticks? I remember doing it with my family a couple of times, but not often, as we didn't live anywhere near a bridge with a proper river flowing under it! :D

I prefer Rupert Bear myself. I never read any Winnie the Pooh, but the grandkids do have the books. :)

They are worth getting to know, Julie - completely different from Rupert, but both are true childhood classics. When I was little, we had several of the original A.A. Milne stories as individual picture books (with the Shepard illustrations). I think my favourites were "Tigger comes to the forest and has breakfast" - in which Tigger tries and discards several different foods before discovering he loves Roo's dreaded Extract of Malt - and "Piglet is entirely surrounded by water"! :D

On a completely different note, I recall watching this cartoon when I was little and quite enjoying it, but now can't remember a thing about it apart from the theme song! Gummi Bears
