I know it's not quite the same reading a book off a computer screen, Hope, but Charles Dickens' books are in the public domain and can be read free of charge online. A Christmas Carol has been made available by Project Gutenberg:

"Heyho for a starry night and a heathery bed!" - Jack, The Secret Island.

"There is no bond like the bond of having read and liked the same books."
- E. Nesbit, The Wonderful Garden.

Thanks, Anita. But you are right about reading on computer screen. The magic of the books seem to disappear when you read them on the screen.

There's still the chance to print them out after editing it with a word processing program. I like Times New Roman size 8 for saving paper and toner.

I had to write my diploma thesis in Times New Roman. I try to avoid using it whenever I can.
But the type it's printed out in doesn't really matter as long as you like the book.
PC screen or paper? I'd go for paper any day, to me a book should be used and it should bear some clues that it has been used (i.e. read) before. Books which are bright as new pins years after they were bought, haven't been lover by their owners. I don't mean torn or missing pages or anything, but some signs of normal use. With a PC screen things are a bit complicated that way.

I'm currently reading two books (I usually am) or rather, three: Harry Hill's TV Burp book (!!), 'The Woods' by Harlan Coben, and a children's book: 'The Thieves of Ostia', the first in the 'Roman Mysteries' series by Caroline Lawrence.

I'm enjoying them all! 8)

As usual, I'm (re-)reading several books concurrently/alternately - go figure! :lol:
  • # 'METROPOLITAN CORRIDOR - Railroads and the American Scene' by John R. Stilgoe (1983);
    # 'MURDER ON RUSSIAN HILL' by Lenore Glen Offord (1938);
    # 'THE RED STORY BOOK' by you-know-who (1946, in a 1955 reprint);
    # 'AN AFRICAN MILLIONAIRE' by Grant Allen (1897)
    # 'THE CHERRYS BY THE SEA' by Will Scott (1954)
    # 'WILDERS WALK AWAY' by Herbert Brean (1948) &
    # 'THE EYE OF THE MONSTER' by Andre Norton (1962)

You're free to use "Wingdings" if you like :P - But naturally anyone may use the font (s)he prefers.

I also prefer books on paper, it makes you less reliable on a power supply, but the electronic format has its advantages, the search-function is very helpful when looking for a certain passage and you don't know the exact page of it, or even the book, and it's a bit more convenient to carry your library on harddisk or USB-stick etc than using a truck carrying around (ain't it so, Tony?).

Mnay years ago I was given "Biggles Flys West" and eventually it went the way of all things.I had a memory of this book recently and remembered how good it was.Last week I went into a local charity shop and what do you think? there it was. I'm reading it now and it's even better than I remembered. What a lucky boy!
When I'm grown up I won't forget the things I think today.

I know this to be true because when I recently went to the local library to collect a book I had reserved:

Simon Schama's History Of Britain Volume 2

They tried to give me a book you had reserved instead....assuming that the surname I offered meant that I was YOU.

If perchance this is not the book you're referring to above...then I can confidently inform you that your reserved book.... HAS most definitely arrived....whatever it is.

I'm currently reading Street Gang - The Complete History of Sesame Street, by Michael Davis. Highly recommend. :D Fascinating account of how Sesame Street and the Children's Television Workshop got started, and the guiding principles that have made it such an astonishing success and a great icon of children's television as well as educational television.
Best Regards

Have you read any of the other Narnia books Ria Ann? if not it may be a bit difficult to understand, but it is a great story - one of my favourites. I hope you enjoy it.

I haven't seen the movies, although I have seen The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe on TV. I often find that if I see a film after reading the book, I'm disappointed because the characters aren't quite how I imagined them.
For that reason, I have never wanted to see the Famous Five DVDs. If the children don't look like the illustrations I first saw of them - The Eileen Soper ones, it would seem a bit wrong somehow. I also get cross when films don't follow the books very closely!
