I started in on Kate Atkinson's NOT THE END OF THE WORLD yesterday, a book of short stories, its the prescribed discussion choice for the next book discussion group, I was not expecting too much but they're superb, a really great read. As the last meeting was cancelled we have 2 books for the next session, the second is David Mitchell's THE BONE CLOCKS, at 620 pages quite a chunky read

I’m just about to start reading My Uncle Oswald a 1979 adult novel by Roald Dahl.

Certainly not one for the youngsters, from what I remember!

From what I’ve read about it, you’re probably right, Anita.

I would be hopeless in a book club or discussion group, as I positively HATE reading books that have been set for us to read - I can rarely get into them. I have to really want to read a book in order to enjoy it - I guess it comes from many, many books prescribed to me by school, college and university over the years, as I did mainly English Literature courses.floragord wrote:I started in on Kate Atkinson's NOT THE END OF THE WORLD yesterday, a book of short stories, its the prescribed discussion choice for the next book discussion group, I was not expecting too much but they're superb, a really great read. Saying that though, I'm currently reading Monday Adventure by John Pudney - a book someone sent me - and I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I've got to say the majority of "set" books so far aren't ones I would have chosen, the best I can say it extends my reading horizons widely, and I've so far given the items away after the meeting . It is interesting how hugely divergent people's views are on the same item, CASTLE D'OR which I would absolutely never read again was a couple of members sworn favourite ever bookRob Houghton wrote:I would be hopeless in a book club or discussion group, as I positively HATE reading books that have been set for us to read - I can rarely get into them. Re: What other author are you reading at the moment?
I've just finished the third and final book of Inbali Iserles' Foxcraft trilogy, which I discovered a couple of years ago when the first book was published (I stumbled across it in our local Asda!) and have had to wait a year each time for the following two books. Well worth it! The series is aimed at young readers (probably ages 8-12), but a great and really compelling read for all ages. It's set in the world of foxes and their kin and follows the journey of a young fox, Isla, who learns to master foxcraft — secret magical arts known only to the wisest foxes — as she seeks to find her lost brother and stop an ancient evil power from being awakened... It's the sort of animal-fantasy story that could have been really clichéd and badly written, but it wasn't at all — I found the whole series gripping from start to finish, with lots of excitement and plenty of surprise twists that I didn't see coming, as well as characters you really come to care about. The conclusion of the saga was very satisfying, too, with no let-downs at all. Highly recommended to anyone else who likes this kind of book! I'll definitely be keeping the trilogy and reading it again.

I am reading the latest John Le Carre book, Legacy of Spies.
Some modern day British spies bring in the elderly and retired spy Peter Guillam because they have questions about a secret operation that took place during the Cold War. It's Le Carre's first George Smiley novel in 25 years. Lots of references to the characters and events of the previous George Smiley novels.

Just completing Helen MacInnes THE VENTIAN AFFAIR, always enjoy reading something set "in situ" if possible when visiting somewhere

Finished reading "Dead Souls" by Nikolai Gogol (I had started it ages go, but for no reason I stopped reading it when I was halfway through).. It is a truly amazing book, quite bizarre, in some ways, but everything else is simply brilliant, especially the last few pages, I loved the descriptions of Russia.. Once more, Russian writers are UNIQUE!

Finished reading 'Monday Adventure' last night and thoroughly enjoyed it! It was quite a preposterous plot, but very well done - intriguing and thrilling - and I would highly recommend it, and its author John Pudney.
Now reading the last of my Abbey reward books, 'Wrecker's Bay' by Percy Woodcock. A very easy read, and quite like Enid Blyton in style.

As Halloween is approaching, I've started to read some H. P. Lovecraft. So far, I've read 'The Tomb' and 'Dagon', and they've both turned out to be slightly disturbing!
