Re: Lord of the Rings?
Well each to their own . Are you referring to the books or the films Nigel? What about them do you find boring? Am not trying to pick apart your sentence - obviously not everyone likes the same thing - but I'd be interested to know what about LOTR bored you
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
Time to die.

Re: Lord of the Rings?
To be fair, I've not read the books. I have attempted the films, but have yet to keep awake. They are far too long for my attention span, and I can't be doing with all those fighting sequences - thousands of soldiers on horseback.
I certainly wouldn't rubbish the books, just not my cup of meat.

A bit Off-Topic here Nigel, but you seemed to have changed to Moonraker!

I am with you here, Nige. I attempted the books, but they were as dry as dust to read. I liked the films and even went to see them at the cinema when they came out, but I have never felt the urge to revisit them. Once was enough.
A friend of mine bought me The Hobbit and read it to me while on holiday, but I kept falling asleep. I don't think she was best pleased.

Re: Lord of the Rings?
Heh I really don't see how the prose could be described as dry .. I think it's wonderful. The descriptions and the imagination that have gone into them strike me as being completely unparalleled .. I feel as though I am with the hobbits every step of their journey...

Re: Lord of the Rings?
Everyone is different but I simply cant imagine life without LOTR. I discovered them in my teens and re-read them every 18 months or 2 years. I also loved the movies which surprised me as I am not normally a fan of movie adaptations of books. However Peter Jackson did a superb job.
Tolkiens writing boring? His style may be a bit ponderous in passages but in general the sheer scope and breadth of the picture he paints simply sweeps the reader along. I never fail to be awed by the LOTR and to feel a twinge of sadness when I come to the end of it.
