Roger Hargreaves' Mr Men

Post by Stephen »

I absolutely adore the 'Mr Men' series as a child. It was amazing how some brightly coloured felt-tip pen drawings accompanied with a few paragraphs could be so inventive and funny. My favourite story had to be Mr Mean who lived in a ramshackle hut, ate cold porridge, told the few people who would talk to him that he was really poor and yet whose hobby was counting his vast hoard of gold coins!

It was a real shock to me in 1988 when I heard that Roger Hargreaves had passed away at only 53.

I loved them too. THe one I remember most clearly is Mr Greedy I think .. or perhaps Mr Tickle. Oh, and Mr Uppity!
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
Time to die.

You might be interested to know that Chorion, who control the rights to Enid Blyton, also have the Mr Men as part of their portfolio. These are actually the only children's authors that they look after, all their other authors are adult crime writers, Agatha Christie and Georges Simenon (Maigret) amongst others.

I loved Mr Sneeze and Mr Muddle. My girls have about a dozen of them now, and both love them. One of their favourites is Mr Forgetful - they must have heard the story twenty times but they still giggle uncontrollably.

I used to read the Mr. Men stories in Playhour comic in the 1970s. Do you remember them, Jools? Mr. Greedy and Mr. Uppity were two of my favourites. I also liked Mr. Messy - I loved the way he was drawn as a pink scribble.

Certainly do Anita. I also loved Mr Messy and thought Mr Small was soooo cute.
When I was pregnant I bore a frightening resemblance to Mr Greedy!!!

My five-year-old loves the Mr Men - his favourite is Mr Noisy.

I'm currently assessing a manuscript by a writer whose surname is Daft. Mr Daft sounds straight out of Mr Men!

I think his son is now producing his own stories a bit like the Thomas the Tank Engine books.

I loved the Mr Men books when I was a child. My favourite was Mr Messy - possibly because I was so untidy! I still have a couple but I keep them in my old bookshelf at home. I've been thinking about picking up the series at some point, or possibly just getting the big omnibus.
