Trustee From The Toolroom by Nevil Shute. A man goes halfway round the world after his sister is killed in a yachting accident to recover some diamonds that have been illegally hidden in the hull of the boat.

Finished "Born to run". I found the end quite disappointed but I imagine Joe and Best Mate (his first name) had a 'happily ever after life'.

I started to read "The new adventures of the Whishing-Chair" series by Narinder Dhami. Unfortunately it seems to me they lack the atmosphere Enid Blyton was able to create.

I remember looking at those in a shop, Wolfgang, and thinking that they weren't good value for money (if bought as single volumes new rather than second-hand) because they were quite thin with big print and not many words to the page. If a child had read Enid Blyton's Wishing-Chair books first, I think s/he would be disappointed with Narinder Dhami's.

I'm reading Angela Brazil's The Youngest Girl in the Fifth, one of her best stories. It has the original text too, a character mentions he has a collection of birds' eggs, a modern reprint (which is unlikely) would soon have that edited out.

I adore Nevil Shute, and am just toying with the idea of re-reading NO HIGHWAY. I intend to be more adventurous in my reading horizons in the New Year - the first resolution for 2017 - but for now tend to revisit old friends in the in-house library. I'm currently just competing Susan Howatch's CHURCH OF ENGLAND series with Absolute Truths, a very enjoyable read.John Pickup wrote:Trustee From The Toolroom by Nevil Shute. Susan Howatch used to be one of my favorite British authors. I read "The Rich are different" and the sequel "The Sins of the Fathers" several times and also enjoyed reading her thrillers in the 1980's (which she published until 1970), but I just couldn't get into her religious series .
I tried reading vol. 1 though, "Glittering Images", but it was so different from what she wrote before.

My friend who is teacher in the States and I have just started on Pam Munoz Ryan's Riding Freedom which is about a girl from the 1800's who having been raised in boys orphanage, learns to ride horses progressing to becoming a stagecoach driver along a path toward personal female emancipation culminating in being the first woman to vote.

Jimmy Stewart's work! Thank you for sharing that, I'll have to add it as an optional extra to my Christmas list!
THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE is one of my favourite Susan Howatch titles, THE RICH ARE DIFFERENT and THE SINS OF THE FATHERS are old friends too. The "Starbridge Six" and "St Benet's Three" aren't everyone's cup of tea, having been "dragged up" in a convent school the content of the series is quite familiar to me, a pleasant visit down memory lane as things have changed considerably in the C of E since the books were set in the 1930s-1980s.
