I read The Incredible Journey years ago - haven't seen the film. It's based on the author's three real-life pets, although I don't think they ever actually made such a journey; she just wrote from her knowledge of their characters and the relationships between them, and how they might behave if they really were out in the wild having to survive on their own. I recall I quite enjoyed it, but have never felt like re-reading it and wouldn't have placed it among my very favourite animal stories.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I saw the film Incredible Journey back in the 60's. Good film but I wouldn't want to see it again.
Julian gave an exclamation and nudged George.

I'm the same ... seen the film and have no desire to see it again or read the book. Some stories are like that.... glad you've read them but don't really want to do so again.

I feel like that about The Lord of the Rings. I read it once, enjoyed it and I'm glad I did read it, but I don't think I'll do it again.

My husband read his Tolkien paperbacks so many times that I finally gave him new hardcover copies plus a book with maps from all the areas for his birthday a few years ago. I hope they will last him the rest of his life .

Not sure if this is the right place to put this but.....
I've just had an e-mail to say that Ruth Fitzgerald will be visiting my daughter's school, and if we'd like her sign one of her books, then we need to place an order. I'd never heard of her, or her books, so just had a quick Google. On the face of it, the books seem ok, I'll have to read one to form a strong opinion.
However, I was struck by something in the blurb, and that's the way that modern books portray the relationship between adults and children. In Enid Blyton's books, adults are usually respected unless they are unpleasant like the Stick family. Certainly I can't recall a single book where children found their parents embarrassing, whereas at least two of Ruth Fitzerald's books mention embarrassing parents, and I'm sure she's not the only children's author to write in that way. I though how sad it is that is the way that families are seen these days.
I'm going to try and get hold of one of these books to see what it's like before I decide whether to order my daughter one or not, although as the blurb said it would appeal to Jacqueline Wilson fans, I'm rather doubtful about what it will be like.

Plodding on with Philippa Carr's bestselling 18 book saga DAUGHTERS OF ENGLAND - an interesting journey through history beginning with the reign of Henry VIII and progressing through the female line to the 1960s, only 6 books to go!

Re: What other author are you reading at the moment?
Last night I started reading "Sechs Jahre" (6 Years) by Charlotte Link. It's an autobiography on her daughter's last 6 years before her death while struggling with breast cancer.
Charlotte Link is Germany's most successful thriller author (actually she is my favorite German author), but hasn't published any thrillers in several years. Last year I found out why and now I'm readiing her autobiographical book which also mentions the bad conditions for cancer patients in many (not all!) German hospitals. Scary!

I've just started reading Us by David Nicholls:
'Go down to the side-shows by the river this afternoon. I'll meet you somewhere in disguise. Bet you won't know me!' wrote Fatty.

THE MIRACLE AT ST BRUNO's up to THE GOSSAMER CORD and would have missed the final WE'LL MEET AGAIN; excuse is our dining room is being decorated and I have to crawl under the table and root through the items stashed out of the way to reach the bookcase!!

Re: What other author are you reading at the moment?
Floragord, mine used to be in big plastic containers on the attic until we turned our dining room into a library (it's still a dining room whenever friends & relatives stay) and I was able to put hundreds of my books into two extra bookcases. Now Philippa Carr is visible again. I'm planning to reread the series next year. It has been decades...I remember how much I enjoyed the first 5 or 6 volumes. Did I mention that I once created a family tree for this series?
