I read some more articles in DORSET MAGAZINE today.
On page 95 Katharine Wright misspelled Kirrin (Kirren, in the photo).

Sue Quinn claims on page 98 that Kirrin Island was inspired by Brownsea Island. I know it probably inspired Whispering Island, but Kirrin Island???

Then on page 103 there is another FF article called "Simply Smashing!"
I believe that the quote under the title (that food tastes better outdoors) is from Anne, not from George, isn't it?
In the text James Warren mentioned that food rationing in the UK did begin in January 1940 and ended in July 1954. That's an extremely long time and hard to imagine nowadays :(.
In the last part he writes that the upside of the rationing was that the whole nation was eating more healthily (remember the golden cohort who lives well into their eighties).
An interesting article which I enjoyed reading.

Close to 60 more pages to read...

Wow, thanks for that, Pete! :D Lovely to see an article that doesn't get into personal criticisms of Enid's writing style or her private life for a change, but just rejoices in all the elements of her books that have made them so popular for 75 years — especially the Dorset coast and countryside that inspired her so much. :D

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

What a great article & wonderful magazine. Those pictures have me wanting to get on the next plane.
They certainly transport me to the UK of my EB books.

Thanks Pete - great article - although I admit I ignored it for a while because I thought it referred to the earlier article in 'Dorset' magazine, which I already own! That will teach me to not read posts!

Maybe it should have a thread of its own though in case others have made a similar mistake as I did...? :D
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

Thanks all.

Rob,I was going to give it it's own thread and then worried that it may have been already been mentioned elsewhere.

Maybe Anita can decide on what she thinks is best?

Maybe the thread name could be changed to 'Articles About Dorset'? :-D

Not that it really matters but it would be a shame for people to miss this great article! 8)

I missed this post from 2017 but my Dorset experience the year before was not encouraging as far as EB was concerned. Visited Brownsea and Durlston where none of the museum shops recognized EB though even Beatrix Potter merchandise featured! I was particularly upset at Brownsea and left a long protest note in their register! Only Vivian's lovely shop at Corfe and the bookshops in Swanage city centre did justice to EB.

I felt the same when we visited Woburn Abbey north of London, home of the Duke of Bedford.
In 1957 there was a CFF movie for children made called "Five Clues to Fortune" aka "The Treasure of Woburn Abbey", it's one of the better CFF movies, in the same league as "Five on a Treasure Island", "Treasure at the Mill" (based on Malcolm Saville) and "The Carringford School Mystery" all of which are available on DVD.

However, none of the elderly ladies in their seventies who sold stuff at the gift shop or who did the guided tour inside Woburn Abbey ever heard about this film which was filmed on the grounds of Woburn Abbey and in the abbey.
