Nib Nab and Nob

Post by IceMaiden »

This book is listed as being by Enid Blyton:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132066872640" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have never heard of this title, it doesn't ring any bells whatsoever and the Cave brings back 0 results. Nowhere on the photos in the listing is the author's name visible. Is it really by EB or has the seller simply made a mistake/ decided it will sell better if it's an EB book? :?

The book doesn't credit an author at all, but it certainly isn't by Enid Blyton.

Could it be by Marie Bayne?

I don't thinks so, but I don't really know. I've have seen copies of the book before and looked through them as I lke the illustrator, Honor C. Appleton - she was responsible for the Josephine books and I believe I have one or two of those somewhere, but goodness know where!

I have this book in the box somewhere. I am not an expert but if you have read so many EB short stories, you can recognize if the stories are written by EB or not through some patterns and choice of words. These stories are not written by EB, in my opinion. :D

Thanks Tony,I didn't think it was somehow :D . I'm puzzled as to why the seller would put that it is though , as surely when whoever buys it realises it's not by EB as stated, their either going to ask for a refund, neg rep the seller or both. Although I noticed the seller has got other actual EB books listed so perhaps if they were given them in a job lot they might have just assumed they were all by the same author.

I once saw a book listed on eBay that I didn't realise Enid Blyton had written...

...a book called 'Heidi'...
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

(E. Blyton, Sunday Times, 1951)

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Thanks, Pete. I've never come across any books from the Good Luck Series but they look rather nice. I particularly like the look of The House Through the Trees and The Magic Gate and Other Friday Afternoon Stories.

Mary was Five and The Black Rock has the same cover as Two Happy Tales, suggesting that one is a reissue of the other.
"Heyho for a starry night and a heathery bed!" - Jack, The Secret Island.

"There is no bond like the bond of having read and liked the same books."
- E. Nesbit, The Wonderful Garden.

There was one a couple of weeks ago listed as 'The Tailor of Gloucester by Enid Blyton'. Directly beneath was a picture of the book, clearly taken by the seller not a stock image, which had in big writing on the front 'The Tailor of Gloucester by Beatrix Potter'....

Just how do you manage to get it wrong when you've got the book before you with the author's name in front of your eyes and even photograph it for an advertisement?

Hmmm. Maybe it's a conspiracy... the truth is that every children's book published in Britain in the last 100 years or more was actually written by Enid Blyton... under all kinds of assumed names, of course, so no-one would know it was really her...

And yes, I know The Tailor of Gloucester was originally published in 1902, when Enid was only 5 years old. She was precocious — the Mozart of children's literature, if you like.

(Sorry, guys. It's nearly 1.30 am in Abu Dhabi and I'm waiting for my plane to London after a 13-hour flight from Melbourne, which possibly has something to do with my sanity levels being critically low. :P )

Well, Courtenay, I suppose they're going to fix that in the near future, they're planning non-stop-flights between Australia and Europe.
