Home-Made Games Based on Blyton Books

Post by Rob Houghton »

Split from another topic.

As a hobby in around 2002 - 2005 I made quite a few board games based on EB stories/series - Naughtiest Girl game, Adventure game, Famous Five Adventure game, Faraway Tree Game etc. I also made a Find Outer game and the board is sort of like a map of Peterswood, but based quite heavily on Old Thatch and surrounding area. Yes - so many different ideas on how Peterswood should look! :-)
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

I made a board game a couple of years ago, based on the Famous Five - mainly ths first book. The board was basicly a map of the dungeons of Kirrin Castle with squares to move around onto, and certain squares enabled you to pick up an ingot (a coin from the copper box!) if you answered a question correctly. The person with the most 'ingots' in the end was the winner!!

Making Blyton-based board games is great fun! My sister and I made a Famous Five one when we were children. On a huge piece of cardboard we drew Kirrin Island with all the features marked (wreck, castle, cave, etc.) and players used dice and counters to follow a "path" round the island. Some squares had instructions which you had to obey if you landed on them, e.g. "Shelter from a storm - miss a turn" or "You've dropped your torch - go back 3 spaces to fetch it." The winner was the first person to reach the gold ingots in the dungeons!

All these games sound great! I love hearing how Blyton books inspired us as children (and as adults!) :-)

Here are a couple I made - about 2004/5 -

Find Out Board Game -

Famous Five Adventure Game -

I made quite a few around 2005. There was a group of us (all adults!) who met up for games evening etc, and so they were always pleased to try them out and proved quite popular! :-)

Wow, I'd love to play those, Robert! Our childhood game was nowhere near as detailed and attractive!

Well done, Robert. Pity you couldn't find someone to have commissioned them for you. :)

It would have been great if someone had made them commercially! :-)

My personal favourite was this one, I think - the Naughtiest Girl game. It was quite entertaining, as each 'lesson' was a small game in itself, and the object was to play as many tricks and be as late for lessons and be bottom of the class as often as possible, resulting in getting expelled! The first person to be expelled was the winner.

They are beautiful, Robert. I played Journey through Fairyland with a lucky friend who owned it... I always wished I had the game too, but it was not to be. At the time I was not aware it was connected to Enid Blyton.

The only 'legitimate' Blyton game I own is the Famous Five Treasure Quest game - which cost me £90!!! It was a present from three friends who came with me to an EB Day! ;-) It's a lovely game - very good condition. Wish I'd got a copy of Journey Through Fairyland! :-)

Daisy, there is a very similar board game from Germany out there, it's about Brothers Grimm's fairy tales:

I enjoyed playing it way back in the 1980's when it came out at Ravensburger.

I have the Ravensburger Enchanted Forest game - so well made, and a good game to play, searching for fairytale treasures under trees! :-) The quality of Ravensburger games and puzzles is second to none.

I don't know if you have a game called "Memory" in the UK as well. You have ca. 64 little cards which have a neutral backside and a photo on the front side. Each motif exists twice. Now you mix them all and then put them neutral side up in several rows (for instance 8 rows with 8 cards in each row).
Each player is allowed to turn around 2 cards. If they don't match, the other/next player can turn around 2 cards and so on.
This one has gorgeous photos:

Yes, I know the Memory Game well - all my children used to enjoy playing it - and when the actual memory cards were not around an ordinary playing card pack could used instead - reds of the same denomination being counted as the same, and likewise the black ones.
