Re: What Enid Blyton book are you reading right NOW!
I bought a nice copy of The Children's Life of Christ not long ago, complete with the dust wrapper, etc, but I haven't yet got round to reading it. Personally, I am not very religious, so the genre doesn't appeal to me as much as some of Enid's other similar sort of 'non-fiction' titles do. Nevertheless, I am always amused at the frequent references of religion in Enid's novels: not when the reference is too intense, but a mild association doesn't bother me. The only time of year, we go to Church (though we have the choice to go, throughout the year) is Christmas, and it always seems a part of the annual festivities to me. I always remember one year at Church when the Vicar fell over the altar rail in the middle of a hymn: it was a good job he had a good sense of humour because we were all in stitches!

Well, as I said, Enid doesn't lay on the doctrinal aspects at all in this book; I honestly haven't found anything in it that would be likely to rile non-Christians or non-religious people. More likely that very hard-line traditionalist church people would be offended over it not being "religious" enough! No, it's really a very pleasant and enjoyable read, whether one takes the contents as the ground of one's faith or just as nice stories. Enid certainly brings out that the whole of Christ's message is for all people to love one another, which is a pretty unobjectionable moral regardless of one's background or beliefs.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I take a break from reading another title in family series. Currently, I am reading Spiteful Letters. Very enjoyable.

Francis, I'm almost through with reading "The Mountain of Adventure".
What should I say...it's growing on me .
But seriously, it's much better than I remembered it. My copy has all the former reading dates inside, the last time was in 2011.
55 more pages to go.
Again I was impressed with the new color inside the mountain that the children had never seen before.
Looking forward to reach the point where Bill says: "Don't forget Bill Smugs."

Blimey! That's organised. If you fancy reading it but the dates are too close, do you stop yourself?Chrissie777 wrote:Francis, I'm almost through with reading "The Mountain of Adventure".

No, but it keeps me from reading it again too early when I still have so many unread books at home .

I am a totally anarchic reader with a distressing tendency to read several books at once!

I am like you, Francis. I tend to read 2 or 3(sometimes even 4!) books at once! I am in the middle of reading Missing Necklace and now I am planning to read Rubadub!

I can only ever read one book at a time or I become hopelessly confused with the plots! :

I read one at night (most of the time it's EB, because I sleep better afterwards ), another book during the day (but always a very different genre) and have a third one which I keep in my car for doctor's appts, hair dresser and traffic jams.Francis wrote:I am a totally anarchic reader with a distressing tendency to read several books at once!
It took me a year to finish the Simon Wiesenthal biography by Hella Pick which I read at the doc, hair salon and when the traffic was not moving.

I started to read the Society's editions of Sunny Stories for little folks. Right now it's "Tales of Binkle and Flip" (none of my favourite characters I'm afraid), but I'm still racking my brain where else I read "The kite that flew away". I don't even remember if it was in German or English. I suppose I'm growing old .

Read "Mystery of Holly Lane" last night. Enjoyed it. I do like the Five Find Outer books; glad I discovered them.

It's nice to know that you like FFO series, BB. I am a big fan of Fatty and co. Hope you can read all the titles and I would like to know your assessment of FFO series as a whole.

Well, I think that I have read five so far and I would put them amongst my favourite series (including the Famous Five . Barney stories, and the Adventurous Four). Although I enjoy the Secret Seven, the FFO series is aimed at a slightly older readership, which is a good thing. I definitely prefer the FFO series to the Adventure series.
