Well, I dedicated it to Pete, since it was his idea.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I almost bought an early 'Five got to Smuggler's Top' but assumed there should have been an illustration at the front - opposite the title and this was not there.

Well, today mail service delivered three more books: "Good idea, Amelia Jane!", "Oui-Oui et le Père Noel" and "Oui-Oui et la girafe rose". I don't think though that the books in French were originally written in English.

The nearest I can find are Noddy Meets Father Christmas and Noddy and Jimmy Giraffe. I imagine you've checked those, Wolfgang.

When I find the time... I think I have a copy "Noddy meets Father Christmas", but I don't know the garage books.

The postman delivered the 2014 Famous Five annual about two minutes ago. Looking forward to it.

You're not quite right, Nigel, I bought it, but don't read it (right now).
About man or men, either way they're three fifth of woman/women, so both genders are covered ;-).
Btw, I read "Noddy meets Father Christmas" and checked "Oui-Oui et le Père Noel", so judging from a short comparison, it's the French translation of it.
About foreign languages, there are people here that are much more talented than me - I think it's Sixret teaching herself Japanese, Arabic and other languages.

Today I went for my annual trip to Sheringham, and was disappointed that my usual visit to the book shop there yielded nothing more than a slightly battered Secret Seven annual and a couple of other non Enid Blyton books. Even the other books I bought more for the sake of buying something, there was nothing that really 'grabbed'. I looked in all the charity shops in the town, as sometimes I've picked up a gem or two, but they had nothing to interest me.

After a cup of tea and watching the steam train depart, I went for one final look at the sea before coming home, and noticed a small shop that I'd never seen before, selling retro goods. I had a quick look round, but it was mainly clothing, mirrors etc., and was just about to leave when I noticed a small shelf with books on. One of which was Castle of Adventure which I've been trying to get hold of for ages. I picked it up, and it fell open at the date - 1946. I turned to the price expecting it to be something astronomical, and nearly fell through the floor to see it was only £4.50. OK, it didn't have a D/W, and couldn't be described as mint, but it was certainly a reasonable copy. Even better, next to it on the shelf was a 1966 reprint of River of Adventure, complete with a slightly tatty D/W. Again just £4.50. I walked out of the shop, and back up to the station with a massive grin on my face. Not sure I've stopped smiling yet. :D

What a lucky find Katharine and well done on getting those books. Both sound like a bargain.

Thanks Daisy, I really am thrilled. Especially as it I haven't had much luck finding books for what seems ages. We had intended to stop off at Norwich on the way, and I was looking forward to visiting the book shop there, but in the end it wasn't practical because of the timing of the trains, so I was feeling a little disappointed. What is it they say - "all good things come to he who waits". OK, it wasn't a rare 1st edition complete with mint D/W, but that would just be greedy.

Apparently the shop had only been open since March. I hope they manage to get some more bargains in ready for my next visit in 2015.

Absolutely, I'm certainly not complaining. :D Honestly, it took a great deal of self control not to do a little jig around the shop!
