Well done and thanks again, Rob. I'm tempted to say anyone who doesn't like January in Britain could always come over here and try January in Australia — it's lovely and sunny and we're headed for a top of 40°C in Melbourne this weekend...  8)

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

That's far too hot. I wilt if it ever approaches 30C here.

Wow, 40°C is 104°F, in a language I understand. As Daisy says, that’s far too hot. :|

Fortunately by then I'll be with my parents in Inverloch, which is further south and always a little cooler than Melbourne — and we have air conditioning!!

Another thorough write-up. Thanks, Rob! I've hung up halves of coconut for the birds but I've never filled them with fat first.
Rob Houghton wrote:Enid also tells us how she dislikes January - it is too cold, too dark, and too LONG! she writes. I disagree - I've always liked January - January is an optimistic month in my view - the start of the year - filled with hope - plus its my birthday!
My son and I both have January birthdays, which brightens up the month. It's nice to see the days beginning to get longer too.
Rob Houghton wrote:Our Letter Page has a letter from a little girl in Stoke-on-Trent - Christine Platt. I find it interesting, because she tells us - Dear ENid Blyton, For a present I had a miniature weaving loom. I decided to make purses and sell them - and this is how I'm able to send you this sum of money. I know it all helps..' Enid expresses surprise, as she has never heard of a miniature weaving loom. I'm sure my sister had a similar thing when she was little.
I never had a miniature weaving loom but I'm always interested to read of the numerous different ways in which readers of Enid Blyton's Magazine raised money for charity.

I remember Gran cutting up some bacon fat so we could put it in the coconuts for birds. Not lard though!

PS - good reviews as always

Thanks all! Its great to know people appreciate the reviews. I enjoy looking through the magazines each fortnight and comments make it worthwhile. :-)

I tried stringing bacon fat up for the birds last year, but our birds weren't interested!

Australian Magpies enjoy bacon fat, I know that much. My gran used to throw little bits of it out on the lawn for them (they're ground feeders). Not sure what other birds here would be interested in it, though. I had friends up in Queensland who would feed Pied Butcherbirds (which are normally meat-eaters, hence the name) with sultanas!

I have always disliked January. Maybe it is down to the sadness of Christmas being over once more. I have never liked the New Year - always preferring to hang on to the old one!

I have a stack of these magazines somewhere, I must dig them out at some time.

Reading your post brought two songs to mind, Nigel!

I've always believed I like January and the New Year because that's when I was born - not just because its my birthday, but for astrological reasons. I find New Year's Eve depressing, however, and New Year's Day - its an odd man-made manufactured time - as is the whole concept of 'New Year' I guess, but once I get nearer to when I was born, I feel a sort of optimism and January is therefore a hopeful month to me. 8)

Of course, the hope is rarely fulfilled, lol...the rest of the year I'm generally pessimistic, and have always been a 'glass half empty' kind of guy.

When I get near to my birth date I get depressed. Another year closer to my obituary. You're luck to have half-a-glass full, Rob; I don't even have a glass. :|
