Skippity-wee

Post by cliff »

Can anyone identify this rhyme? My mother used to say this to me when I was little. My memory mat be slightly inaccurate so bear with me.
Look up in the sky said Skippity-wee
Somebody's lost a balloon.
Catch hold of the string
It might fly away
If we don't run after it soon.
Oh Skippity-wee! How silly you are!
That's only the big round moon.
Is this one of Blyton's?

Yes, that is one of Enid Blyton's poems, Cliff. It's called 'Look in the Sky!' and you've remembered it pretty well:
"Look in the sky!" cried Skippity Wee,
"Someone's lost a balloon.
Get hold of the string, it will fly away,
We really must catch it soon."

Oh, Skippity Wee, how silly you are,
It's only the big round moon!
I've got it in Enid Blyton's Treasury of Verse (Purnell, 1979) but it was first published in The Big Bedtime Book (Purnell, 1951):

"Heyho for a starry night and a heathery bed!" - Jack, The Secret Island.

"There is no bond like the bond of having read and liked the same books."
- E. Nesbit, The Wonderful Garden.

Thank you so much Anita! And so quick!
That means a lot to me. Yes 1951 would be about right, the year before I was born.
That's made my day :-)
