RIP Robert Hardy

Post by floragord »

Saddened to hear of the death of the fine actor Robert Hardy today, we particularly enjoyed his work in ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL in which he played vet Siegfried Farnon, and since then his appearances in the Harry Potter movies. RIP.

Being one of the old ones, I first became aware of Robert Hardy as Alec Stewart in 'Mogul' (which was called 'The Troubleshooters' after the first series) 1965-l972. He was a young man of action in that, but soon proved that he could play a wide range of parts, such as Abwehr Sgt. Gratz in 'Manhunt' in 1970, Robert Dudley in 'Elizabeth R' in 1971, and the title role in 'Winston Churchill - The Wilderness Years' in 1981. There have, of course, been many other roles besides those already mentioned.

I used to love All Creatures Great and Small - something we watched every week! RIP Robert Hardy. :(

Sad news. I couldn't believe what a great age he had reached though. He must have been about 80 when he did his last Harry Potter film, but I don't think he looked that old.

I only ever saw him in All Creatures Great and Small - a 'must watch' in our household when I was growing up. :D

Here's a piece of trivia I stumbled across a little while ago. What have Siegfried Farnon and Basil Fawlty got in common?

The answer is they're apparently each based on a (different) real life man called Donald Sinclair.

I also mourn the loss of Robert Hardy - a fantastic actor and for me most memorable in All Creatures - surely the best TV serial of all time. We have all 91 episodes (inc the Xmas specials) which we have seen several times! We were fortunate enough to go to the 100 year birthday celebration for the real James Herriot (Alf Wight) in October last year in Leyburn, North Yorkshire to celebrate what would have been the author's 100th birthday. It was a black tie dinner for over 400, attended by his family and all the actors from the original series - Robert Hardy, Christopher Timothy, Carol Drinkwater and Peter Davison. They all networked with everyone at the reception - so glad to have been able to meet them all. It was clear that the whole cast held him in great respect and affection.

I have read that if Hardy didn't like an actor he was working with, he could make his life difficult. One such actor was John McGlynn - Calum Buchanan in All Creatures.
