I went to New Orleans recently for a conference. Two people at the same conference were I am afraid mugged in the French Quarter one night. I did my exploring of the French Quarter during the day, I feel like I would probably want to avoid it at night.

I hope that you and Chick enjoy your holiday next spring, Eddie. Some good advice from John as well. :D

I'll keep in mind your comments about the French Quarter, KEVP.

Thanks for your good wishes, John. I'm sure we'll have a great time. :D

A brave plan, Eddie. May the two of you have a safe and rewarding trip.

When you arrive back home, you'll be singing Marc Cohn's 'Walking in Memphis' with real feeling.

If blue suede shoes in your size are for sale in Memphis, Tennessee will you buy a pair?

'Aurélien Arkadiusz' :D

I think I'll pass on the blue suede shoes. I've never liked suede shoes.

I once felt very cool, aged about 19, in a pair of black suede shoes...until I went out in the snow in them! I've never liked suede shoes since! :x

Yes, suede shoes could only work away from the wind, rain, snow and, my downfall, (don't ask) mud. And (my apologies, Eddie) blue suede shoes might be  rather over the top for anyone except an Elvis impersonator....

'Aurélien Arkadiusz', whose deplorable sense of humour is sometime also  over the top.

I explored the French Quarter by night and had no problems. You can roughly divide it into the well lit, crowded tourist areas and the less populated quieter streets. It is very easy when there to see when one is getting off the beaten track. Stick with the crowds and everything will be fine. I certainly would not hesitate to go out at night there again.

I'd say that goes for just about any large city or town, really. I once lived near an area of Melbourne with a "reputation" and had no fears about walking there on my own late at night — just kept well away from dark streets and made sure I always stuck to the well-lit areas with lots of other people around me, so I never got in the slightest bit of trouble. No-one is likely to commit an assault in full view and hearing of the public, after all. You and Chick are obviously pretty sensible and I'm sure you'll both stay safe and enjoy it, Eddie. :D

I agree - I think its exactly the same in any city or town - Birmingham, Brighton, Liverpool, even Stratford-on-Avon!
