A hangover from the days of slow even pre-broadband internet perhaps?

Or from the days when computers filled a whole room and could only run for short periods without risking burning their valves out??

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Re: Computer Upgrades, Issues and Conventions
another thing I hate with Windows 10 is that every morning when I turn the laptop on it takes at LEAST 10 minutes for my emails to come through - something that never happened on windows 7 or 8. I can view them all on my tablet much quicker - straight away in fact, but my laptop takes an extra 10 minutes to load emails I've already seen on the tablet. Laughable. That shows the difference between Google (the tablet) and Microsoft. Google even displays my hotmail/windows emails before my windows computer manages to open its own email system!

Re: Computer Upgrades, Issues and Conventions
I turned off the inbuilt email app thing. I'm not a fan of the whole 'app for everything' with Windows 10. I'd rather just hit my bookmark for hotmail and check my emails that way.

You mean you don't access emails from the envelope on the start page? I wasn't aware that I was now using an app, lol!

I don't see why for desktop Windows Ten you really need apps as it can run full programs or in the case of web based mail straight in the browser. It takes me less than ten seconds to switch on enter the machine password and read this site on my Chromebook which I'd guess is similar to android based Tablet.

Yes - my Google Nexus 7 is very fast - even though its now a few years old - much faster for emails and websites than my laptop. They run off the same internet connection, and yet my laptop is always saying there's no connection available or 'can't connect to this network' while the tablet rarely has connectivity problems.

When I was trying out Windows 10, Rob, I always checked for emails, using Firefox. I never used any apps, for it. Just saying.

I didn't even know I was using an app - just clicking on 'mail' on the start page! Obviously it's changed since Windows 8

Re: Computer Upgrades, Issues and Conventions
Yep - I'm saying I access my emails by opening Chrome and going to outlook.com, same as I always have.
Interestingly, I've found I've got internet issues with my new laptop too. Every so often it will go to the yellow triangle saying it's connected but has no connectivity. If I disconnect and reconnect it's fine. Sometimes it does it every five minutes for a half hour, sometimes it's once a day. I'm fairly sure it's not my internet as my phone isn't having problems, nor is my TV when streaming Netflix.

Re: Computer Upgrades, Issues and Conventions
That's interesting - I often get the yellow triangle and have to reconnect manually - sometimes it says 'you can't connect to this network' - which is even more annoying - if I can't connect to the network we are paying for, what can I connect to?!

Re: Computer Upgrades, Issues and Conventions
I have been getting that yellow triangle more frequently of late. Sometimes I just wait and sometimes I reboot but that doesn't always rectify the problem. We have also found the mobile phone signal at home is much reduced in recent weeks but I don't know if the two are connected.

It's good to hear some others are having the yellow triangle! I thought it was just my computer!

Likewise Rob... we thought it was something to do with our router perhaps.

I must be so lucky not to get any problems with W10! As for email, I never use the inbuilt app. I use Thunderbird as an email client and all my email addresses go there. It loads pretty well instantly when I boot up my laptop and PC.
