I believe the silver paper was valuable because the aluminium could be recycled. We used to collect it for Guide Dogs for the Blind but I don't know whether they take it any more.

Here is this week's page. I've not time to read it just now, just off to catch a train!

Re: Enid Blyton's Weekly Letters in Teachers World
Thanks for the link, Nigel. I hope you have a good trip!
Enid's description of the boats on the river is very animated - you can sense her excitement and, as usual, she takes her readers with her and involves them in the experience. It's interesting that she goes through a cornfield to the river, rather than walking along Coldmoorholme Lane. Fascinating too that one of the boats is named White Swallow. I wonder whether that boat inspired the name of Captain and Mrs. Arnold's plane in the Secret series?
Poor Bobs, hunting in vain for the buttons on his coat!
The storyline of 'The Disappearing Baby' was used a number of times by Enid Blyton. The same thing happens in a Simple Simon story, and Betsy-May does a similar thing as well (in her case involving her teddy bear instead of a baby).

Re: Enid Blyton's Weekly Letters in Teachers World
I enjoyed the story 'The Disappearing Baby' and also recognised that the basic outline of the story has been used several times by Enid Blyton. An amusing and enjoyable little story.
I was pleased to realize how, again, Enid takes us with her on her trip in this letter: in this case, to the Boat race. The reader's imagination is immediately hooked by the realistic and relaxing description and it is so fun and enjoyable to read. I too, love the sense of excitement which is clear in the text and Blyton's own enjoyment, no doubt in both the race and her writing.
Poor old Bobs! Our dog always likes to sit in the sun, even when it is, for us, unbearably warm! He's got a favourite spot right at the end of the garden where he always sits in the sun!

I enjoyed the story and poor Bobs lament - its certainly "coats off" weather today and I feel sorry for the dogs being walked along the seafront in the hot sun at midday, surely early or late would be best Looking forward to your "Best of Books" link, Poppy

You've just reminded me: I haven't written the review for this week again! I'll write it tomorrow and put it on the blog. Thanks for the reminder!floragord wrote:Looking forward to your "Best of Books" link, Poppy

I just loved Enid's action-filled, breathtaking you-are-there description of the boat race as well! And yes, poor old Bobs in the heat. I used to have a cat, Blacky, who I'm sure must have also wished he could remove his thick black coat in hot weather - he would spend the hot Australian summer days flopped on the cool tiles of the kitchen floor!

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Thanks, Nigel. I love Kensington Gardens - and I would have chosen Breakfast Tea too!

Re: Enid Blyton's Weekly Letters in Teachers World
Tony is very sorry but he's still having connection problems and is unable to get online, so unfortunately we'll have to wait a little longer for this week's Teachers World letters. Hope he's soon back with us - it's not the same without him!

Looking at today's link, I see Enid is asking if we want rain for our gardens. It would seem that this date in 1930 was hot and dry like it is now!

The Teachers' World letters are always worth waiting for. I hope Tony doesn't get fed up putting them on the website for us especially as it is causing such a lot of trouble lately.

The letters are now up. I am sorry they were late but I have had no internet connection for the last six days.
