I rather like Betty Maxey's drawings as they're pared down and elegant but I don't like the way the colour has been applied - too flat and too gaudy for my taste. Interesting though!

Are these just examples of Maxey illustrations which have been painted by teh owner of the books, or professional painting!?? They look like watercolour painting done by a child. Mine would have looked about like that when I was a kid - especially this one - :-D

I quite like these. They remind me very much of the bright and vibrant colours in a lot of pop art, which I have a fondness for, but then I also like Betty Maxwell's originals anyway which obviously makes my taste in art a bit suspect...

It's good to see you on the forums, Walter! If you haven't seen it before, you may be interested in this record sleeve designed by Betty Maxey (originally posted by Pete in another thread):

Oh, I like that! I like a bit of Marty Robbins too, so I'll have to try and track down a copy. Thanks Anita (and thanks also to Betty Maxey's number one fan for posting it in the first place... )

A warm welcome back to you Walter.
(Not just because you are a very discerning man who appreciates Betty's internals..)

I quite like BMs cover illustrations on the old Knight books but the internal illustrations make my eyes bleed :D
It’s Eileen Soper or no one for me

My favourites as a kid -

Although its a shame that The Cave doesn't show the brilliant wrap-around cover designs on these annuals, rather than just the front cover. ;-)

Sorry to put these in the Betty Maxey thread - but as the brilliant illustrators of the annuals were never credited, sadly, they are unlikely to ever have a thread of their own, unlike the Marvelous Maxey! :-(

Me too, Nigel. These coloured illustrations are only fit for the shredder imo. :|

While I was scanning the pictures from "Kirrin Island Again", I was mindful of the feelings of the Soperites amongst us and took the liberty of touching up one of the pictures so it might be more appealing to those who feel that Betty Maxey wasn't as "artistically talented" as Eileen Soper.
