To be fair, none of the covers look great - even these with Mary Gernat or Trey Evans illustrations don't look much better when coloured in block colours!

Wasn't that foppish picture from the Strange Bundle banned or removed from later editions - or am I getting mixed up with another illustration?

We can compare three different illustrators work on the same scene in Vanished Prince:

Treyer Evans 1951

Dylan Roberts 1965 (left) & Jenny Chapple (right)1968

Sadly, there is no Lillian Buchanan or Mary Gernat depiction of this scene.
Jenny may have her knockers, but just look at the detail she captures on Mr Goon's contorted face.

That's an illustration from Holly Lane - Wilfrid answering the door to Goon.

Not sure about it being banned...but it's interesting that they used it to illustrate the cover of 'Strange Bundle' -- as the illustration is of Goon visiting Wilfred in 'The Mystery of holly Lane'!

Joseph Abbey v Jenny Chapple

Surely Joseph Abbey wins that one, even with his knockers! His brother illustrated some Jennings books as S. van Abbé - a bit of trivia for you:-

Salomon van Abbé was noted for his drypoints of the legal profession and the law. He signed much of his commercial work as an illustrator "Abbey", or "S. Abbey" to distinguish himself from his brother, Joseph van Abbé (1889–1954), who signed himself "J. Abbey". (In the 1911 census, the van Abbé family gave their surname as Abbey.)

I think everyone missed my comment...Pete was talking about jenny Chapple's knockers... ;-)

I agree Tony - J Abbey wins hands down.

Don't get me wrong - I knock J Abbey - not a fan - but there are some of his illustrations I really like. Its odd that sometimes he was so bad at what he did, and other times was way above average. When compared to the more modern illustrators of the last thirty years, he come out exceptionally well!

This is one of his best, in my opinion -

Obviously,I cannot speak on behalf of Jenny's knockers, but I would definitely agree with Rob,that the artwork above and figure therein would look extremely well hung alongside any of the other illustrators personal offerings.

And there I was thinking that Strange Bundle cover illustration was the only thing here that might encourage, er, non-Blytonesque interpretations... :P

I agree - more please, Pete! :-D

Its a good idea for threads - especially as freqently the same scene is illustrated by different illustrators in different editions.
