You may not have seen these 1970's illustrations to compare with the originals.
Anyone any idea who the illustrator could have been?
Does the same illustrator provide the illustrations for the Dean & Son 'The Adventurous Four Again' in your opinion?

Lots of tins being opened up here.

Is the picture correct? Are these the tins they brought themselves,or the ones they borrowed from the store cave?

Thanks for sharing the pictures, Pete. I've always assumed that the same artist illustrated both Dean & Son Adventurous Four books. We've discussed before that the Dean & Son Happy House stories (printed in Sunshine Book and Happy Hours Story Book), Galliano's Circus books, Come to the Circus!, Cherry Tree/Willow Farm series and Mr. Twiddle books might also have been illustrated by the same artist, along with perhaps a few short stories in the Dean & Son collections.

The front cover of Mr. Galliano's Circus (Dean & Son, 1972) has a signature in the bottom right hand corner which appears to say "G. Robinson". The internal pictures weren't always illustrated by the person who did the cover, but it's a possibility.

The tins have English labels which suggests they were bought in Britain, but whether that fits with what Enid Blyton wrote I don't know. I like the illustrations very much, as they're full of atmosphere and the facial expressions are beautifully drawn.

I always loved these illustrations, and those in the Galliano books etc. To me, the style is instantly recognisable - especially the hairstyles, and the clothes, which often include tartan patterns on skirts etc. The artist has a great talent, I think, for making clothes look like the material they are meant to be made of, using just a few strokes of a pen. It's a pity they were never credited, as they are incredibly talented. :-)
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'
