Ugh, let's hope not. I always find it telling that no-one has dared to rename Dick and Aunt Fanny in the Famous Five books (other than in the 1950s film and the 1990s series, and even then Dick always remained Dick)... is it because those are Enid's biggest bestsellers and there'd be far too much of an outcry??

That's one tendency that I WOULD like to see swung back the other way, but obviously it won't be with the current publishers. But who knows — I can see no reason why they couldn't be changed back again some day, if future people at Hachette decide to think differently...
I specifically mentioned Zoe and Pippa in The Adventurous Four on Thursday, and they seemed to agree that it would be better to go back to Jill and Mary when they get round to republishing that series, but that may not be for a while.

Well, that's something. But didn't they deliberately delete all the references to the war and the Nazis in that one as well, while they were at it...?

I'm firmly of the opinion that 'The Adventurous Four' is one of Enid's most timeless 'classics'. It doesn't need modernising, it doesn't need name changing, it doesn't need to be made politically correct. Its one of her most perfect novels simply because its set in an historical setting and features historical happenings, so really it should be kept as it is purely for those reasons.

That's why I think it would make a great film...especially since 2019 will be 80 years since WWII started. :-)

I have put Mystery Stories into the Cave now as I saw it lying around in my bathroom! I have no idea where Adventure Stories is it might be anywhere!!

I normally only book combinations into the Cave if they are hardbacks as there are numerous paperback versions, but as these had hardback editions originally they deserve to go in as reprints and anyway I am heavily into Armada at the moment! :D

We once had a forum discussion about adapting The Adventurous Four for TV (or cinema) and people were in agreement that it should be a period piece:

I recall that a few other changes were made, e.g. Andy still being at school instead of working, but I can't remember whether anyone has talked of references to the war being removed. The only editions of the Adventurous Four books I have are the 1970s Dean & Son ones, which I believe have the original text, so I can't check.

The Adventurous Four is definitely one of ENid's more 'grown-up' stories, because it deals with real-life events.

Thanks for adding the 'Mysteries' book to the reprints in the cave, Tony - hope you find 'Adventures' soon! ;-)

If a book vanishes in this house it might not surface for years, Rob!

Here is another book for your shopping list though, just your sort of illustrator!
