Re: Website Additions
If you have to consider if £5.99 might be too much for a book, then you can't think the book will be very good. You can hardly buy a magazine for that price.

Re: Website Additions
That's a very good point. I sometimes forget how much prices have gone up since the days when my Twinkle Magazine cost about 15p and a brand new Famous Five paperback was about 75p.
Maybe I'd better take a trip back to the book shop next week - assuming it's still there of course.

True...but then the magazines you can buy for that price are much bigger, much thicker and have glossy pages.

Re: Website Additions
The Famous Five books might have cost even less than that at the time you were buying them. I've just dug out three of mine (they're not in the correct order on the shelf so the numbers are random) and found that Five Go to Mystery Moor (1975, Betty Maxey cover and Eileen Soper internal illustrations) was 25p, Five Get Into Trouble (1977, Betty Maxey cover and Betty Maxey internal illustrations) was 50p and Five Go to Demon's Rocks (1978, TV cover and Betty Maxey internal illustrations) was also 50p.Katharine wrote:That's a very good point. I'm shocked that Knight paperbacks doubled in price from 25p to 50p in just two years, from 1975 to 1977!

I can certainly remember being shocked when I bought Secret Seven Adventure in 1984 (one of the last EB books I bought) and discovered it was £1.10 !!

Re: Website Additions
There have certainly been massive price increases in books and magazines in my lifetime. In the late 1940s, the cost of my favourite magazine and comics was just 2d each (less than 1p). The favourites in question were Sunny Stories, The Dandy and The Beano. Sadly, the two former publications no longer in existence, but I believe The Beano now costs £2.20 per issue.

No wonder Enid Blyton gave one of her books the title Five on a Hike Together!

It wasn't unusual for prices to double over the decimalisation period. I well remember, working at Smith's, a diary priced at 3/6 one year, became 36p after D-Day.Anita Bensoussane wrote: I'm shocked that Knight paperbacks doubled in price from 25p to 50p in just two years, from 1975 to 1977!

Re: Website Additions
I have been playing in the Cave this morning and I have just added Holiday Stories. I have moved it to a new section along with Christmas Stories as this looks like a series starting on its own rather than just lumping it in with all the other non-series short story books. I have also given the Treasury books their own section as I will be adding another one in the near future when I have sorted out where all the stories come from.

Thanks for this addition, Tony. Most interesting!

I'm pleased that these stories are being published for all to read, but not too sure about the jazzy updated book illustration. The illustration looks like stick people really. Just hope the youngsters love it and it sells the books.

Very nice Tony thanks. I agree with Julie about the illustrated covers; not my cup of tea but if it attracts the children then that's a good thing indeed.

Re: Website Additions
I see it's got At Seaside Cottage in it!
Interesting to see some of the changes to the titles, which Tony has noted in the Cave:
Lazy Lenny [Lazy Leonard]
Was that done by the same people who changed Jill and Mary to Pippa and Zoe?
Staying with Auntie Sue [The Spoilt Little Girl]
I'm guessing "spoilt" is no longer commonly used in the sense that Enid used it, i.e. over-indulged with treats and privileges. But still, it seems a bit odd to have such a complete change of title to something that doesn't even resemble the original!
A Puppy in Wonderland [A Puppy in Fairyland]
Now I'm wondering whether this is a genuine case of political correctness gone haywire - surely "fairy" hasn't been as completely taken over by the alternative meaning as "gay" and "queer" have?? (And will the many fairies in Enid's stories have to be changed into something else now?) Nothing so wrong with "Wonderland", mind you, except that it sounds like a place where you'd be more likely to find Alice than a puppy...

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)
