Yes I have read that Rob. I also believe that for at least some of those serialised stories he was actually paid by the word!! Or perhaps it was the sentence. I'm not sure which but that would certainly explain some of the rambling he did. I wish I could remember where I read that. I think it may have been at The Charles Dickens museum in Doughty Street London.

I visited the Charles Dickens Museum in Doughty Street not long ago, but I can't remember whether it said anywhere that Dickens was paid by the word or sentence for some of his stories. He certainly wrote some of his stories in instalments, either for publication in magazines or simply as monthly or weekly parts which could be bound into one volume upon completion, and he even changed the direction of some plots after receiving feedback from readers.

Isn't that interesting? I assume Enid did have her full-length stories completed before she serialised them, but I wonder if she also ever responded to suggestions from readers and made any modifications along the way? I'm guessing probably not, but it would be interesting to find out.

I live near Rochester, which also has a lot of Dickens-related places to visit - I haven't seen most of them yet, though.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I believe that, in some cases, Dickens owned the magazines where his stories were serialised. Household Words, which he formed in 1850/51 was one of them.

There's something he had in common with Enid too, of course - she ended up putting her own name on hers! 8)

I've just read the last chapter of The Mystery of the Silver Cup, and enjoyed the story very much. Thank you Julie... A very satisfactory ending - but what else should we expect with Fatty on the case?

Thanks, everyone. So pleased you enjoyed it. I had to read it again to see how it all ended, as it's been ages since I wrote it.

What a nice surprise, a new serial by Julie. I enjoyed the previous FFO one and shall look forward to reading this new Secret Seven story. I'll probably let a few episodes build up before I start. Thank you, Julie.
