Tony's Bibliographies - 'only' £509.85 for the set!!

Post by Rob Houghton »

Much as I treasure Tony's excellent bibliographies - and I have all four - I'm not sure I would have paid over £500 for them!!

Stella Books, obviously!!

Although in fairness they are all signed by various people and it says they are limited edition colour versions. Still seems rather a lot and the £9.85 seems a strange amount, especially as there is a £6 delivery charge. I'd have thought they'd have called it a round £500 including p + P, that would presumably still give them a very healthy profit. I wonder if/when they will sell?

yes - admittedly they are the limited edition colour versions (mine are the B&W ones) and have those signatures, which is a nice touch - but still seems expensive, given that many people wouldn't be interested (only real Blyton nuts and collectors I mean!)

I suppose they might be bougt by another collector who will sell them in 10 years time for £1,000.

Leaving the asking price aside, what a truly magnificent set of books for the serious Blyton collector.

Out of interest, what would you be prepared to pay for them if you could submit a private bid to the seller?

I would be happy to go up to around £250.

Good question. I doubt I'd go above £100, as I already have the books, so would really only be paying for the colour version and the signatures.

Nice as the signatures would be, as I've only ever met Tony, and sat at the same table as Imogen, it's not as if they are people I've known. Whereas my Noddy book was signed by Sophie Smallwood at the last Enid Blyton Day and so it means more to me as I actually chatted to her.

Still, each to their own, and if someone is happy to spend that sum of money on the books, I hope they enjoy them. It certainly would be a special purchase for an Enid Blyton fan or maybe they'll be snapped up by a Tony Summerfield fan? :D :D

I bought all 4 in April last year for approximately one fifth of that price.

What is the number in the four that you bought, Sixret? I see that the set being sold by Stella are No. 12.

I could not check the number right now, Tony because the books are in one of the boxes. The photo used above is taken from the seller's photo.

What I was asking really was are they a limited edition coloured set - if so you got a bargain, but if they are just a black and white set you were robbed!

There were actually 50 numbered coloured sets, but I still have Nos.1 and 50, so there are 48 out there. I know that several of the original recipients have died, so there are probably a few on the secondhand market. As far as I know the original owner of the Stella set is not dead, but he is possibly selling them as they don't have sufficient details about the reprint wrappers of the Famous Five books! :D

I'm not sure whether mine is coloured set or B&W set. I half suspect that mine is B&W set. Almost a year has passed and the item's page could not be opened anymore.

I'll try to rummage my boxes this weekend to find the physical books that is if I could find the correct box.

You don't want to flog off your own two coloured sets, Tony, and see if you can get more than £1,000 for them?? :D :D

I suppose he'll wait some more years until he can take £10,000 for them, taking the rising of prices during the last years as a comparative scale.

For those who may not know who are interested in collecting Enid's works, the cave still has the above volumes available for sale to Enid Blyton Society Members.

The prices are even more reasonable than some on ebay too!

Although they are the black and white versions, rather than the full-colour. But still well worth having! I often find them useful, especially for original prices of books etc - a detail that isn't included in the cave. :D
