Are these fair prices? FF & Adventure Books?
They looked reasonable to me compared to some of the astronomical prices we've seen at times?

Surely the Famous Five book can't be a first edition, as it was reprinted it says in 1949?
A first edition is the date the book came out, surely, 1946!
And I can't see a date on the River of Adventure book.
So I don't know if that is a first or not.

As well as stating that the book is a 1st Edition, the seller also expresses that is a 3rd Impression, Julie.Julie2owlsdene wrote:Surely the Famous Five book can't be a first edition, as it was reprinted it says in 1949?

Personally I wouldn't pay that much for a book, but they are definitely more reasonable prices than some you see on eBay. I was surprised to see that a nice copy of The Christmas Book which I was very keen on bidding on; went up to £24 in the last few moments of the auction, on eBay, yesterday, so it just goes to show that some people are prepared to pay these prices! That doesn't include me, though: my maximum bid was going to be £5!!

Do you mean the Award ones that were about in the 80s/90s? Sorry if I've got the years wrong, I'm out and using my phonepete9012S wrote: The seller also has a complete hard backed set of Award Famous Fives.I'm not sure who illustrated that edition though??
I had my copies around that time so that's why those years came to mind.
I've got a few of those Award ones and they're illustrated by Jolyne Knox.

Were you, really?! I was quite confident that it might have gone for quite a low price, because it was at 0.99p - 1 bid, for ages, until the evening before, when more and more bids began to appear!pete9012S wrote:Poppy,I was bidding on that Christmas book, but I didn't go that high!

Yes,like you I think I bid around a fiver on it before I went away.
I was surprised to see the eventual price it achieved as you have also seen seen it doesn't even come with its dustjacket!

Re: Are these fair prices? FF & Adventure Books?
The Christmas book always seems to go for quite a high price in its original form. I know I lost out on a couple of copies when I was looking for one. Firstly I think it's not a very common title to appear and secondly it will be extra popular in the run-up to Christmas.

Yes, and there's a copy for sale complete, with it's dustjacket for £15 on eBay - with a Buy It Now option!pete9012S wrote:I was surprised to see the eventual price it achieved as you have also seen seen it doesn't even come with its dustjacket!
Yes, you're right. It will indeed be popular around Christmas time. I did see a copy for £20 in a Local Bookshop, recently - so maybe that wasn't as unreasonable as I originally thought it was.Fiona1986 wrote:Firstly I think it's not a very common title to appear and secondly it will be extra popular in the run-up to Christmas.

Just buy the new Christmas book that has been published recently. It contains the same text plus other Christmas short stories.

Re: Are these fair prices? FF & Adventure Books?
The new edition will probably contain lots of editing, etc. I'd prefer to read the book in it's original format, alongside the beautiful old illustrations: even if I do have to pay a bit more for it. That's not to say the new edition doesn't look an enchanting book: it does, but it is just my preference to read Enid's stories, how she wrote them.

Re: Are these fair prices? FF & Adventure Books?
Pete, if The River Of Adventure IS a 1st edition then that seems a reasonable price as the dust jacket appears to be in very good condition.
The FF book has a chipped wrapper but that's about the going rate for that edition with the white-spined dust jacket.
